Something about fashion always inspires a scene in me. A long vivid caftan gives me the urge for long days in Miami, a rich cable knit makes me crave Aspen and when I saw this assortment of pieces from Ralph Lauren’s rugby I immediately went to the “country home.” In reality if (and by if I mean when) the Bedgoods settle for winter weekends in our country home I’ll be wearing pajama pants from Old Navy and a performance fleece hoodie. But, in my fantasies I would be wearing long plaid skirts and velvet vests and rich red snug little jackets – you know, just the sort of thing for chopping wood and lounging by the crackling fire.
Hot feet
I apologize. As a shoe lover myself I should be ashamed that in a previous post about fashion in Breaking Dawn I failed to mention one of the more fabulous elements – Bella’s killer wedding shoes. And so after an astute reader and dear friend pointed out my glaring omission I decided to devote a post to more than just the Manolo “Swan” (seriously that what it’s called) but also give a nod to the most fabulous wedding Manolo from Sex and the City movie.
If you’re in need of something blue on your wedding day I love the idea of doing a blue shoe. So did the mother of fashionistas Carrie Bradshaw when she wed the elusive Big in the movie. And good news, ladies … you can buy the blue shoe at your neighborhood Neiman’s for the bargain price of just under a grand.
In the opening of Breaking Dawn we see Bella practicing her walk in a pair of killer heels that dare I say outdo the SATC blue heels. And once again, good news, ladies … you can secure these for just under $1,300. For some reason I’m sure there’s a Twihard somewhere considering a $200 wedding dress in order to afford those shoes.
And if you’re not in the market for wedding footwear, the Swan also comes in black or pink.

The dawn of a fashionista
I couldn’t let the whole Breaking Dawn phenom pass us by without commenting on the style of it all.
Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan for the first time ditches the angsty grunge and high school girl in a hoodie vibe for some real fashion … Before she’s relegated to pajama pants and tshirts (I probably wouldn’t have time to hit up Destination Maternity if I was dealing with the whole carrying a vampire baby/ wolves trying to kill me drama).
Her wedding dress will without a doubt become the new shape of wedding with its sleek cut and nod to vintage with that (to die for) lace insert in the back.
The other fashion highlight for me was Alice’s throwback to the 20s dress for the wedding. Epic.
And once again the real Bella aka Kristen killed on the red carpet. In the states she was flawless in a slit up to there J Mendel and across the pond a black (reminiscent of Angelina Jolie for some reason) Roberto Cavalli was fabulous.

Under the Broussard Sun
When I was pregnant with my now five week old baby boy I would visualize this scene from Under the Tuscan Sun where Sandra Oh is dancing with her new baby in the garden. It’s something I did to calm the fraying nerves (as an addition to perhaps the most serious praying I’ve ever done) when the magnitude of what was coming began to settle in. It was an image that settled me not because I was delusional enough to believe life with a newborn would be dancing in a serene Italian garden, but because it reminded me that absolutely no matter the sleep deprivation and challenges to come that this child is a blessing. Period.
Maybe there are women who had a baby with stars in their eyes and a belief all of life with their new baby would be such tender moments. I, however, always feared there would be too many moments like in Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood where a bevy of kids are puking and pooing all over an overwhelmed Ashley Judd.
Motherhood I’ve come to understand very quickly is both.
And now that we are celebrating week five in Wilder World I realize that those dancing in the garden moments do exist and do so only because of the challenging moments. One makes the other so much richer.

The truth about stretch marks
When it comes to pregnancy there are many truly insignificant things we, as women (vain vain creatures that we are), fear. Among the many woes we’re likely to face are stretch marks. Gasp. And while I’d rather not have any, I figure next time Sports Illustrated asks me to be on the cover of the Swimsuit Issue I’ll have to pray they use Photoshop or perhaps wear a tankini. In other words, I’m not exactly making a living off of smooth abs pre-baby. (Each day, I do diligently apply the best in stretch mark prevention lotion just in case.)
As I approach week 37 of pregnancy I couldn’t help but think about the real stretch marks of pregnancy. The reality that life is utterly and irrevocably changed already and will be changed so very much more once the baby arrives. (In our case one William Wilder Bedgood slated for 10/10/11.) Like stretch marks there is no real preparation, there is no way to prepare and expand and envision life with a baby. You just have to be willing. Willing to change, to adapt and ultimately to stretch your home, your heart, your life beyond the bounds you ever thought possible for this new human being.
And so as we enter these last few weeks, we’re doing whatever we can to ready our hearts and our home with the full knowledge that we can never prepare enough. And yes, momma is still diligently applying that stretch mark cream.

From the chair …
This year I’m chairing the American Cancer Society’s Black and White gala – the first ever black and white ball around these parts. As we finalize everything from floor plans to auction items (and I search for something a bit more sophisticated than a tarp for a 32 week pregnant woman), thought I’d share a “Message from the Chair” I wrote for the event’s website. I feel like every time I turn around someone else is facing a cancer diagnosis and while one gala isn’t going to stop the monster – every single dollar we raise is one step closer to finding a cure and helping those who have cancer fight it each day. (Go online now and grab your ticket. It’s a night you won’t want to miss!)
A Message from the Chair
Cancer is black and white. It doesn’t discriminate. And above all it is extraordinarily unfair. These are things most of us know intellectually and many of us learn, unfortunately, practically. It’s something I learned two years ago while working on the American Cancer Society Gala.
When I was first asked to be a part of the gala committee I agreed because I know the American Cancer Society does great work and I knew it was the right thing to do. I could have never known that as the gala neared that first year, my own family would for the first time hear those fateful words – “it’s cancer.”
At the time my grandmother wasn’t a spring chicken, but cancer took her so quickly and carelessly that I finally understood in a real way how the families of the more than 1.5 million people in this country who hear those words each year felt. Robbed. Within weeks of her diagnosis I realized that my Grandma Wanda would most certainly miss seeing my future children, attending my sister’s wedding and so many incredible moments of which I had been sure she would be a part. She celebrated one last beautiful birthday shortly before the cancer took her and what we wouldn’t have given for her to enjoy just one more slice of cake.
It was during the time that the American Cancer Society’s mission connected to me in a real way and there’s been no looking back. And so, it is with Wanda Williams in mind that I agreed to chair this 2011 Gala and with that passion we sought to create a gala that would both honor those we have lost to cancer, laud those fighting today and provide the chance for a truly glamorous evening aimed at creating more birthdays.
What has resulted is the first ever Black and White Gala – an evening packed with meaning and full of people who care passionately about fighting cancer. And doing it all fabulously.
The gala, which is slated for the beautifully renovated Acadiana Center for the Arts, promises to be a departure from anything Lafayette has seen in the world of formal events. A combination of sophistication and compassion from the committee members to the honorary chairs (Dr. Ammarr Morad and Gail Savoie) has created a signature event that is as glamorous as it gets with a hearty dose of fun.
Silent and live auctions are packed with items for every taste from the practical to the luxurious (check out our facebook page for updates on every last item you’ll have a chance to snag). And we’ve banished the boring buffet with a bevy of local restaurants bringing out delectable signature dishes. In short, this isn’t your mom’s fundraiser.
So bring out your fabulous black and white wares August 12 for a night you’re sure not to forget with the knowledge that a night of glamour can and will mean a world with more birthdays.

The truth about nesting …
Lately I’ve found myself obsessing about nursery decor, which has spilled into the rest of our house. Add to that my uncontrollable urge to get things done righthisminute for work and I started to wonder whether I’m nesting.
Yesterday I found fabric (FYI it’s a steal at De Lis on Breau Pre if you need any) that truly thrilled my soul to cover some dining room chairs.
After a lengthy consult and photos exchanged via my trusty iPhone with my interior designing sister, I started to wonder if perhaps this is how interior design types feel all the time – thrilled by fabric and the like. (She says it is.) It reminded me of how I once felt about shopping for that perfect dress or ridiculously high heeled shoe and I realized that perhaps nesting for us ladies who love fashion is just shopping turned on its head.
While there are some great preggy clothes out there and I can still rock a pair of heels (swollen toes and all) … shopping for the growing belly (and other expanding areas) just isn’t the same. And thus all of this fashion-loving-bargain-hunting-shop-til-you-dropness has found a new outlet. My home. I have no doubt it will be thankful for the new attention … my husband may disagree.

Red and white and functioning all over
First and foremost I love a good theme. I always have and always will. I said that to say … themes aren’t nearly as fun when you’re pregnant. For example, this last week thanks to two beloved events I found myself scouring the mall for both a white dress and a red dress.
#1 – White does nothing to minimize a growing bump (and bust)
#2 – Red is not the most popular hue for this time of year and so to find a dress that’s both red AND doesn’t make me look like the Kool Aid man was a feat.
All in all I was fortunate to find affordable dresses (shout out to Target and New York & Company) after hours of trying on that was on a whole other level. And all in all the events were fun as ever and I now have two more dresses in my wardrobe … the bad news is that at this rate those dresses aren’t likely to fit long. A “problem” I welcome!
The Go Red Luncheon for the American Heart Association was a sea of red, as usual, with ladies wearing every shade of scarlet and some really good bags up for auction. (Just FYI, if you’re planning on going start early looking for that red dress because it’s not always a color plentiful in May.)
Cookbook author Holly Clegg was the featured speaker and I was able to snag a copy of her awesome book Too Hot in the Kitchen. (FYI, we’ll be featuring her healthy, easy and creative recipes in FACE.)
On Friday night I headed to City Club with The Mr. for White Linen Night Gala for The Children’s Shelters of Acadiana Youth which is the city’s breeziest soiree for sure with ladies in white and gents in seersucker.

Baby on Board
So, I’m pregnant. There’s really no eloquent way to share news of pregnancy in writing. (I realized this when sharing it via facebook or to anyone that I regularly email and never talk on the phone with.)
I’m excited beyond what I thought I would be and the experience is at once so what everyone describes and yet completely not. For example, I don’t know that anyone fully captured and explained the wonder of the thing to me in words. (Or if they did I was so busy thinking about the potential for raging morning sickness and ineffective epidurals and body parts that could crack, stretch or otherwise be destroyed in the process.)
At one point my sister who has a baby said there are moments that your heart kind of just explodes. It’s something that makes sense now. As a person that tends to tear up pretty often I find myself doing so at an alarming rate. I can’t help but wonder if I’ll cry for a week straight when I finally lay eyes on him. It’s likely I will. And I can’t wait!

Since last we met
I’m officially a slacker blogger. Now that that’s out of the way. Major things that have happened/need to be commented upon in my absence.
1 – My nieces’ first birthday. She wore an extraordinarily poofy multicolor tutu, in which she literally pranced. Classic.
2 – Rachel Zoe’s baby was born. And she named it … wait for it … wait for it … Skyler. Really? Let down of the month. I was hoping for one of two things in the Zoe baby name: 1) something fantastically new and fresh that I’d be dying to copy 2) something absurdly over the top and bizarro. Skyler ain’t bad. But, I was expecting more drama from my favorite super skinny stylist mama.
3 – Rob Pattinson was on the cover of Vanity Fair wearing an odd hat with a gator draped around his neck. Kind of Annie Lebowitz’s version of Swamp People. Love it!

Millions of women have been sending threatening tweets to that lucky alligator since the release of this photo.
4 – I’m wearing white go go boots in public for ReProm. The Austin-Powers-go go- girl look came after a tragically failed attempt at purchasing vintage on ebay. (What’s worse than a mumu? A polyester mumu.)
Pictures forthcoming …
